Stripe's team roles got a lot better. Every account now gets around twenty built-in roles: Refund Analyst, Support Associate, Support Specialist, Analyst, View Only, Accountant, Dispute Analyst and more. No special plan, no contract. If you have been sharing one Stripe login because roles looked out of reach, stop. Turn them on today.
We built Agent Billy for the part of the problem those roles still leave open. Here is exactly where the line is.
What Stripe's roles do well
They answer the question "who is allowed to do this?" A Refund Analyst can view and refund payments and issue credit notes, but cannot see your balance or payouts. A View Only user can look at everything and change nothing. Support Associate adds disputes and customer edits. That is real least-privilege, and for the people on your team who genuinely need the Stripe dashboard, it is the right tool.
What they still don't do
They can't say how much. Refund permission in Stripe is yes or no. A Refund Analyst can refund $5 or $5,000, on any payment, with no cap and no approval step. If your support rep should be able to handle the everyday $40 refund but not the $4,000 one, Stripe has no setting for that.
Every role is still a full Stripe login. Each person gets a Stripe user account with two-factor you manage, and they work inside the real Stripe dashboard: products, disputes, Radar, subscriptions, all of it. For a developer, fine. For a part-time support rep, it is a lot of surface area and a lot of buttons you would rather they never see.
The roles are fixed. You pick from Stripe's list. You can't create "refunds under $100 and nothing else".
Where Billy fits
Billy sits in front of your Stripe account and adds the layer Stripe stops at:
Refund limits per role. Billing Clerk caps at $100 per refund and $500 per day by default. Billing Manager caps at $5,000. Anything above the line gets escalated instead of processed. The limits are enforced on the server, not just hidden in the UI.
A dashboard shaped like the job. A clerk sees customers, charges and a refund button with their limit on it. No settings page, no API keys, no bank details, no Radar.
No Stripe credentials at all. Your Stripe key lives in a vault. Team members sign into Billy, never Stripe. When someone leaves, you remove them in Billy and that is the end of it.
Custom roles on the Business plan, so "refunds under $500 plus subscription changes" is a role you can actually make.
An audit log of every billing action, with the person's name on it, and an AI agent that works inside the same limits.
How to use them together
Give Stripe roles to the two or three people who need the real dashboard: your developer, your accountant, maybe a co-founder. Give Billy to everyone who just needs to look something up or refund a customer. Billy connects to any Stripe account with a restricted API key, there is nothing to migrate, and most teams are live in under an hour.
